Preface
Evelyn Gallagher finds herself falling for the mysterious Killian Hass. As much as she would hate to admit it at first, he is enchanting, charming and persuasive. The game of playing hot and cold has left them both in a situation in which they can choose their own path – they can walk it either together or alone.
To make things even worse for Eve, the sudden introduction to Killian’s former wife Debora is making even more complicated, while in the end, her boss serves her news that will shake her world completely.
Chapter 1
I have always been the one to admire people who are direct and know how to get what they want – ready to take charge of their own life and face all consequences; just like myself. I would say that this is the quality I value most about my character, but certain lines can be very easily crossed when living in such a bold manner, and I cannot help it but admit that my blood got boiling hot when I heard him say:
“I will be your new client.” – the way his lips curved up in an unforgettable smirk made me realize the position I was put in. Here was the moment in my life when I had the opportunity to kick start my career with a long term partnership, but instead all I could do was feel my heart drumming in my chest and cloud my mind with steam. Without even giving it a second thought, I got my bag from the table and stood up.
“I don’t think so.” – with this I left, focused only on getting in a cab and leaving; not caring about how I will explain to Rob losing such an important client. The cold breeze tickled my face when I stepped out of the hotel building. I immediately skipped to the street and called out for a taxi a couple of times waving my hand in the air, but no one was stopping.
“Ms. Gallagher!” – his voice rang in the distance. With a scoff, I turned around to face him. He had the nerve to chase me down to the street!
“I believe I was pretty clear, but maybe you would like me to draw it instead?” – his small laugh erupted in my ears. There was a familiar sparkle in his eyes – one I would see in my own way too often; one of determination.
“Give me one good reason as to why we should not close this deal?” – the question struck me like a thunderbolt and I felt cold shivers running down my spine. I could not face him, knowing that there was no such reason.
“You understand that this is a great opportunity for you and for your career here. This partnership will open the doors for many more other clients and you cannot possibly deny yourself such a chance.”
“I know what you are doing here, Killian!” – I spat back, not letting him finish, instead, he gave me that cheeky smile again.
“Is there anything wrong in me wanting to rely on the biggest publishing company in New York to publish my books?” – my scoff made him tilt his head to the side and cross his arms.
“I saw a business opportunity and decided to seize it, who would have thought that you work for the same company as well?” – Killian teased. My back was facing him again; I could not find the strength to get my mind to focus. Finally, a cab stopped and, just before I opened the backseat door, I hesitated. Agreeing would mean that meeting him again will be unavoidable while denying would make me regret it.
“Shit.” – I cursed under my breath and opened the door. “Fine. We shall get in touch later to discuss it.” My victorious expression made Killian’s whole face shine with happiness. I did not allow myself to get any more distracted by the way the morning light was dancing on him, so I got in the car.
During the ride to my new apartment, I could not take him off my mind. My hands were constantly running through my hair, then squeezing the back of my neck. Every time I closed my eyes I would hear him say “I will be your new client” or yell “Wait!” after me. It would make me shiver and turn my sides red. Hot and cold waves were gushing through me; with my feelings all over the place, I felt so confused – how could I get myself in such a position yet again?
Rolling called me later during the day to check on how the meeting went. Even the sound of his voice could not help me with the intrusive thoughts about our new client. My fingers were tightly wrapped around the neck of the wine glass and guilt took over me when I remembered asking my boss to get me off over the phone.
I did not consider how my request might sound to him but after some seconds of silence, I knew he was going to help me. His deep whispers in my ear; the detailed instructions he was giving me – what to do, how to do it, where I should touch myself – slow or fast; they took me exactly where I wanted to be – over the edge. My boss’s heavy breaths on the other end of the line made me realize what I had done and I felt the burning shame in my heart.
I used him and this made me drink yet another glass of wine, because even though it was Rob telling me how he would touch me, what he would do to me – kiss me all over, make me thrash around the bed with pleasure, bring my wildest desires to life – Killian was the man of whom I was thinking. It was his hands I wanted on me, I imagined his fingers rocking inside my core; his hot, wet lips leaving marks over my skin. It was the thought of him the sole reason for my sinful moans of pleasure that got me over the edge and in the end, I hated myself for it because it was a lie.
Nothing could make me forget the way he made me feel that night, not even the man who had me wrapped around him countless times. But with Rob it had always been simply physical – truly great, very hot, fast, and fulfilling, but never so magical, never as passionate as with Killian. How can I devote myself to work around the person who made me blossom like a flower, or even look him in the eye, knowing this had never happened to me be
fore with another?
I felt cruel and shameful for what I had done tonight and my only hope going to bed was that tomorrow would be better.
Chapter 2
I suppose nothing can be evaded forever, but the way my heart fluttered every time I glanced at my phone, made my stomach twist and turn. I would bite the knuckle of my finger and wonder how to start the conversation. I should just tell him that we have to meet, sign the papers and that’s it, but secretly, I wanted more than that; I just was not ready to admit it to myself.
Everything at the new building was almost completed, I was mainly waiting for some new furniture to arrive. Other than that, it was pretty much done. The contract had been sitting on the desk at my office for a week now, I could not bring myself to give him a call, however. Rob was getting impatient and asked me to do it as soon as possible. He had no idea about the storm unleashed inside of me and I could not blame him for that.
With trembling fingers, I finally decided it was time, even though I was not completely prepared. I crossed eyes with my reflection in the polished mirror and took a deep breath. During the first few seconds when I heard the free line, I was hoping he would not take the call, but all my hopes went to hell when he answered.
“Hello, Killian, this is Evelyn from R&R.” – there was no trace of nervousness in my voice, which pleasantly surprised me. I did manage to get myself composed and this brought back my confidence.
“I was wondering when you were going to call.” – his response did not make my task any easier but it did not shake my grounds either.
“Yes. I was busy around the office, as you can imagine.” – he said nothing, but I could hear him chuckle on the other end.
“When can you come around to sign the papers?” – I asked, believing everything was going smoothly and in the right direction for now.
“I actually have something else in mind.” – this made me frown; was he plotting something mischievous again? I was determined to turn down any of his requests, but he insisted.
“How about eight?” – I checked my clock and answered back, completely unaware of his intentions.
“It is already past ten, what are you talking about?” – knowing him so far, I should have expected this, but it did not occur to me that he might go for something as bold.
“Eight o’clock this evening, Evelyn. I will come to pick you up.” – there was no time to protest as he had already hung up. So many questions were spinning around my head. Soon enough, I found myself sitting in my chair in complete disbelief of what had just happened. I thought I had the conversation under control, but less than two minutes in, he already had me wrapped around his finger, and yet again I had to comply with his devilish plan.
My brows were furrowed down in frustration and the sound of me slamming down the phone on the desk echoed in the empty room. A moment later, the phone was in my hand again and without realizing it, my fingers were dialing his number. I grunted when the line got busy. Fists clenched, I was left with no choice. The thought of the unexpected made my knees go weak.

Despite my inner urge, when I got home, I did not start to prepare myself until it was under half an hour before eight. I was not going to dedicate so much time to get ready just for a simple business meeting that will take no more than thirty minutes. In fact, I was even wondering if I should just throw a pair of jeans and a blouse instead. The time was passing so I stopped hesitating. With my black pants, white satin dotted shirt, and beige blazer, I was ready to go. It took me some minutes to realize that I had been standing in front of the mirror trying to figure out what would be the best way to wear my hair.
This had to stop immediately so I dropped my hands, leaving my locks to fall loose over my shoulders. The vibration of my phone startled me. I did not answer, only hung up, and went to the front door. I was more than certain that Killian would try to make something more than it should be out of this meeting, but I was prepared and this time everything would go according to my plan.
Chapter 3
When I stepped out of the apartment building, I saw Killian leaning on the door of the passenger seat, wearing a dark blue suit with a white shirt underneath, slightly unbuttoned at the top. I greeted him only with a nod, while he smiled in return and helped me into the car by opening the door. Soon enough, he was in the vehicle with me and our ride to who-knows-where began.
I expected him to brag and tell me where we are going, but unfortunately, my expectations were not met. He was awfully quiet and this brought me back to the day when I first met him in LA. The silence was starting to eat me out, so I had to cut it off and ask the fateful question myself.
“I hope you are not taking me to your place.” – this obviously took him by surprise, because his brows rose up and he looked at me.
“What kind of a first impression have I made with you that you would think that I will bring you to my place on our first date? I will definitely have to work on that and change it.” – he laughed and we made a turn in a little paved street. I had never been to this part of town and it got my attention. On both sides of the road, there were old buildings with beautiful and rustic architecture; they reminded me of my vacation in Rome with my parents as a child.
“Well, I must admit that I expected some kind of a protest from your side, but I am happy you agree.” – his sudden statement snapped me back to reality.
“Agree to what?” – I did not recall agreeing to anything, so what was he talking about? Once again he flashed me with a set of pearly teeth and glanced at me with the corner of his eye.
“That we are off to our first date, Evelyn.” – when my name rolled out of his perfectly shaped lips, it straightened the hairs on the back of my neck. I shook my head in disagreement and replied.
“If you consider signing papers for ten minutes and then leaving to be a date – then be my guest!” – Killian pointed at the folder in my lap.
“These? Yes, definitely we are going to discuss them, but after dinner.” – I waived my hand vigorously and refused to participate in his little show tonight.
“No. As soon as we stop, we are going to revisit the contract, sign and then hopefully not see or hear from each other again until the first date for editing.”
Killian failed to reply to my snarly comment as fast as I secretly had predicted to myself that he would. It stung my heart when I saw his expression darken for a moment after he heard me say that I do not want to see him once the deal is closed. I felt the sharp pain as I bit my lip – a sense of regret took over me - maybe I should not have been so sharp with him. A heavy silence fell on both of us.
“Hopefully you will change your mind after dinner.” – he helped me out of the car, but I could not look at him. My thoughts were now at war with my emotions. Every fiber in me was screaming that this is not how anything should have happened, that no feelings should ever stand on the path of work, but on the other hand, there was an undeniable force whispering in my ear that maybe this was not a coincidence after all; maybe it was meant to be.

We walked down a narrow alley which led us to a garden, lit by the fire of many red candles, hanging from the branches of the trees. The way the golden flames flickered and danced over the thousands leaves felt magical. The scent of flowers was enchanting and I could not help wondering if I had fallen into a fairy tale. After a few more steps, I was at the doorway of a small looking restaurant with a roof of glass.
The brick walls made it look like the tower of a castle. There was a single table set next to the windows. In the distance, I could hear the murmur of the fountain and the melody of the birds flying by. Killian was near the table, waiting for me. I did not find any words suitable to express the thoughts going through my mind, so I sat down on the wooden chair, clinging to my folder with documents.
He disappeared for a moment, leaving me alone to enjoy the mesmerizing view of the night sky, painted all over with sparkling stars. My hands had found their way aroun
d my shoulders, trying to keep myself warm in the chilly darkness. As if he had read my thoughts, Killian came from behind me and placed a warm blanket around me.
I snuggled in it, feeling touched and more so confused by the kind gesture, but my breath hitched when, out of the blue, he handed me a single red rose with a golden bow. Its petals were luxurious and velvety; the delicate and sweet scent tickled my senses. Killian had left me utterly speechless, unsure of what to say or do. He was sitting in front of me, carefully observing my every move.
I felt so exposed, like a rose with no thorns. He offered me wine and I accepted. As soon as he filled my glass, I wrapped my fingers around it, as if trying to protect myself. Never had I been the object of such attention and even more so coming from a person who has heard me claim many times that there can be nothing between us. The moment we shared made me forget all previous objections, but still, I was clinging to my blanket, trying to make myself invisible.
“How are you feeling, Evelyn?” – Killian asked. I could hear the concerned tone in his voice. Maybe he sensed my feeling of uneasiness.
